Praxiteles was one of the most famous Athenian sculptors in ancient Greece. He was active in the 4th century BC and was known for his delicate depiction of the natural beauty of the human body and his soft carving style. Unlike the early classical period, which focused on rigid and symmetrical sculpture styles, Praxiteles’ works show an elegant and smooth dynamic, and the postures of the characters are more relaxed and natural, full of life. The Silenus and Bacchus Statue in the picture shows an important figure in Greek mythology, the old god Silenus, holding the baby Bacchus, vividly reproducing the close relationship between Silenus and Bacchus.
Silenus is a mythological figure who is half man and half beast, often described as the mentor and companion of Bacchus, the god of wine. In the Silenus and Bacchus Statue, Silenus carefully holds Bacchus, showing a fatherly love. Silenus is in a steady posture, with his arms tightly around little Bacchus. His delicate expression and gesture convey his deep love for Bacchus. Baby Bacchus nestles in Silenus’ arms, looking up to interact with him, expressing a kind of intimate emotion. Silenus’ body is strong and solid, and the sculptor shows his strength through delicate muscle lines, but his facial expression is soft and loving, highlighting the emotional tension of the work. The overall lines of the sculpture are smooth, and the postures of the characters are natural, especially the action of Silenus looking down at Bacchus, which gives this work an atmosphere full of fatherly love and warmth.
