1. Introduction of Bacchanal of Putti Relief
François Duquesnoy (c. 1597-1643) was a famous Belgian Baroque sculptor known for his exquisite grasp of classical style and unique “elegant Baroque” style. Duquesnoy spent most of his career in Rome, Italy, and was deeply influenced by ancient Greek and Roman sculptures. His works are uniquely delicate and elegant, focusing on the balance between naturalism and classical aesthetics. He is particularly good at depicting cherubs (Putti) and soft body lines. Different from Baroque artists who pursued dramatic effects at the same time, he tended to express the tranquility and elegance of the characters. This Bacchanal of Putti Relief is a replica of Duquesnoy’s original work.
The Bacchanal of Putti Relief shows a group of cherubs surrounding a goat, celebrating Bacchus, the god of wine. The cherubs have different postures, some holding the goat’s horns, and some singing and dancing, expressing praise for the harvest and vitality of life. The relief lines are soft and smooth, and the facial expressions and body movements of the characters are portrayed in detail, especially the chubby image and innocent expression of the little angel, which add vividness to the work.
