1.Introduction of barye lion sculpture

This barye lion sculpture is a classic artistic sculpture of the artist Antoine Louis Bayer (1796 – 1875), the sculpture image of a lion crushing a snake. Barye honored as the founder of the “zoologist” in Paris, and many of his animal sculptures have become classic existence. This sculpture is the first one in the Rittenhouse Square. Although his contemporaries criticized his style and his choice of animal themes, Bayer is now considered as the founder of the Paris zoologist. Louis Philippe expressed his appreciation for the political symbol of the monarchical lion crushing the evil snake, and in 1833, he awarded Bayer to the Knight of the Legion of Honor. Later, Barye was appointed professor of zoology and painting at the Natural History Museum.

This barye lion sculpture vividly portrays a fierce lion roaring at a snake with its mouth open, and we can see its sharp teeth and exaggerated expression on its face. The snake seemed small in front of its huge body, curled up and crushed by the lion’s paws, as if it would be trampled to death by the lion as long as the lion tried hard. This sculpture was made by our Arturban Sculpture Foundry, and the lion’s powerful image, hair and manner, and other details were vividly shaped, as if the image of the lion and snake battle were happening before our eyes.
