The Statue in the Field of Angels is located in the Manchac Catholic Cemetery in Louisiana, USA. It commemorates a tragedy that occurred in the 1950s. The tragedy mainly involved the African American community, when many African babies died at birth or soon after birth due to poor medical conditions, racial discrimination, poverty and other reasons. During that time, the African community suffered serious social and economic injustice, lacked medical resources, and had a very high infant mortality rate. The establishment of this Black Angel Garden Statue is to mourn these premature babies and provide a place of spiritual comfort for their families.
The sculpture is mainly based on the image of an angel, showing the tenderness and care of motherhood. The angel in the sculpture is an African American woman, kneeling on her knees, holding a baby in her arms, symbolizing the infinite love and protection for these innocent lives. The wings behind the angel are spread out, symbolizing the protection and guidance of these short lives, taking them to the peaceful place of heaven. The angel’s face is solemn and full of love. She looks down at the baby in her arms, expressing deep mourning and the power of maternal love.
The angel is wearing a simple robe with folds that fall naturally, showing the exquisiteness and delicacy of the sculpture. The baby quietly nestles in the angel’s arms, symbolizing that they have gained eternal peace. The Black Angel Garden Statue as a whole conveys respect and mourning for these innocent African-American babies through the images of the angel and the baby. It also reminds people to reflect on the history of racial inequality and social injustice, and calls for cherishing and caring for life. Welcome to contact us for more details.
