The sculpture, Te Reo Hotunui o te Moana-nui-a-Kiwa (“The Deep Sigh of the Pacific”), was unveiled in March 2021 as a memorial to Pacific Islanders who served in the World Wars and subsequent conflicts. Designed by renowned New Zealand artist Michel Tuffery, the Conch Shell Sculpture was inspired by a conch shell found in a World War I tunnel in Arras, France. The conch shell bears the name of Agnie Agnie, a Cook Islands soldier who served on the Western Front.
The bronze sculpture is a large conch shell (Chicoreus ramosus) dotted with poppies, a symbol of war remembrance. The shell design evokes a reliance on the sea and the deep cultural roots of Pacific people. The shell’s opening is a spacious space, a symbol of tolerance and shelter, and a symbol of the protection and repose of the souls of the victims. The entire design is full of respect for nature and also expresses good wishes for peace and coexistence. Welcome to contact us for more details.
