1. Introduction of Othello Sculpture
Pietro Calvi (1833-1884) was a famous Italian sculptor in the 19th century. His works are mostly based on historical, literary and dramatic characters, focusing on emotional expression and characterization. His unique mixed material technique makes the sculpture show extraordinary artistic effects in color, texture and layering. One of Calvi’s masterpieces is this Othello sculpture, which is inspired by Shakespeare’s tragedy “Othello” and may be based on the 19th-century black drama actor Ira Aldridge. The Othello Sculpture vividly depicts Othello’s despair and pain after discovering his wife Desdemona’s innocence, showing the character’s profound psychological changes.
This sculpture cleverly uses the combination of black bronze and white marble to create a sharp contrast between Othello’s face, hands and cloak. Othello wears a finely carved cloak with rich textures, showing the folds and fluidity of the clothes, revealing solemnity and majesty. His face is made of black bronze, with deep contours, furrowed brows, and eyes that reveal grief and regret. His hand gently holds a handkerchief, which is the key prop in the play that symbolizes deception and jealousy, hinting at his misunderstanding and destructive decision.
