In ancient Greek mythology, the story of Apollo shooting Python symbolizes the victory of light over darkness and order over chaos. Python, the giant snake, was a descendant of the earth goddess Gaia. It lurked around Delphi, threatening living things with poison and fierce power, and even tried to harm Apollo’s mother Leto. In order to protect his mother and mankind, Apollo chased Python with his excellent archery skills and eventually shot him to death on Mount Parnassus. Delphi has since become his sacred place. This Small Apollo Statue depicts his divinity and heroic temperament vividly.
The statue shows Apollo leaning back slightly, his left leg naturally bent, and his body light but full of power. His right arm has been lowered, but it still maintains the afterglow of the stretch, as if the bowstring has just been released, conveying the sense of power of the arrow flying away. Apollo’s eyes are firm, and his slightly turned head creates a sense of heroic calmness. The cape in the Small Apollo Statue does not fall randomly, but is carefully carved to show the effect of a breeze blowing, which contrasts sharply with his agile body. At the base, the coiled snake body and tree stump constitute an important narrative element of the sculpture, echoing Apollo’s heroic feat of defeating Python.
